Mary Magdalene by Donatello
Donatello's powerful and eerie Mary Magdalene, carved in wood, shows the emaciated body of a fanatically enlightened being. Although you can't see her eyes well due to the lighting, our tour guide, Simone, told us that they were painted blue. Staring intently at her, I experienced a moment where Mary stared back at me, as if her gaze was penetrating and examining my soul. In this brief moment, I could almost feel Mary reach out to touch me.

Pietà by Michelangelo
Michelangelo's Pietà evokes tremendous sorrow. This sculpture seems to really convey a heavy burden ~ not only of Christ's suffering ~ but the immense physicality of his body, requiring three people to remove Him from the cross. Or perhaps the sadness comes from the expression on Nicodemus' face, a self-portrait of the artist contemplating his own mortality.
