Siena's Duomo

Siena's Duomo is situated at the highest point in Siena and thrusts proudly in to the sky. Imagine a cathedral that can hold 700 people. Now imagine that the nave, instead of being the longest part of the cathedral, becomes the transept - the crossbar in the "t" - and you'll get an idea of the scale that the Sienese had in mind in the 1300s. But, lack of significant land space and an epidemic of plague destroyed a cathedral that would have surpassed Florence's. Thankfully, we still have a stunning building, full of light and art to enjoy.
