Flying over Scotland and the Hebrides Islands and Skye Island - flew just south of Greenland on my way to my first stop in Frankfurt, Germany. From there, it’s another 90 minute flight to Florence.

I am finally in Firenze, Italia! I’m exhausted, but I’m here at last, after a 15-year quest to get here...and I’m not sure it has hit me yet.
San Francisco to Frankfurt flight went well, about 11 hours - flew just south of Rejkjavik, Iceland and skirted the tip of Greenland. The flight from Frankfurt to Florence, however, was diverted to Bologna due to heavy fog. Fortunately, Lufthansa came through with the luggage and a lengthy bus ride (a lovely opportunity for a nap!), and my Christmas Florence adventure is begun.

The Accademia Hotel has a bizarre layout, but I’m in a very comfortable room with a private bath.
The weather is cold enough that you can see your breath quite clearly. I think all my layers will be used!
I attended Christmas Eve family pageant at St. James Episcopal Church - la chiesa americana , and there seems to be a sense of community and warmth among the expatriates. Little children speaking English with a distinct Italian accent! Simply adorable.
I am a little repulsed by all the smoking, and the consequent cigarette butts in the street which lends a “dirty” air to the ambience.
A brief walk through the open markets at San Lorenzo was overwhelming: “pashminas” for 7 euro, “leather” wallets and bags. Laura and I took a walk before dinner, and found ourselves in front of The Duomo...but the fog was so low and thick that it completely obscured the distinctive dome.
“So, where is the Duomo?”
“This is it! This is Santa Maria del Fiore!”
“Yes, but where’s the Duomo? This looks like the Baptistry with the famous doors...so shouldn't this be the Duomo?”
“Yes, this is it! This is Santa Maria del Fiore!”
It wasn’t until I reviewed my map back in the warmth and light of my hotel room that I realized that the name of the cathedral is Santa Maria del Fiore. Okay...first blonde moment in Italy!
I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s walking tour so I can get oriented to the city.
